Modix:The USB 2.0 HD case that plays video and music

Tom's Hardware reviews the Modix HD-3510: a USB 2.0 hard drive case that plays video and music!

The HD-3510 USB box for hard disks can be used not only to save data, but to play back DVD, DivX and MP3 files directly on your TV set. Film audio tracks are played back by the SPDIF output as real 5.1 Dolby Digital or DTS signals. The drive box is also designed to play back HDTV in both 1080i or 720p formats

The Modix supports the major encoding formats like DivX, MPEG, MP3, WMA and JPEG but not XviD and WMV..

This is exactly what I need.

After reading the article from tomshardware.com, I started the task of finding what seem to be a reliable ecommerce site in the internet. Without boring you with the details I have found one. http://www.divxtech.com They seem to carry only the HD-3510 and the web site is dedicated to it (seems to have good support for firmware upgrade). Price seems to be the lowest I have seen. They don't try to overcharge you for a black unit (not like some USB external hardrive case companies who all happen to be located in Clearwater, Florida). I have placed an order for one without a hard drive. I will comment with my experience.

I have received my unit on Monday. www.divxtech.com have fulfilled my order as they promised with UPS tracking so I know exactly when to expect it. Great online buying experience.

Took out the 80 GB hard drive from my computer that I was using for data storage and installed it in the Modix HD-3510. Plugged in the power and attached the USB to the computer. Everything came up fine. On the computer, it looks exactly like another hard drive.

Next, moved the unit to the TV and jacked in the audio and video cable. Using the remote, I was able to play all my video (divx, xvid, ...), audio (MP3, ogg, ...) and picture files. The video experience is enhanced on the large screen TV. This is one great gadget.

Prior to ordering my unit, I did an exhaustive research on this and other units on the market. Final choice was made based on quality, availability and cost. But most of all, reliability and support was the final deciding point. I recommend contacting the guys at http://www.divxtech.com and ask them about the Modix HD-5310.
