Cool Tool: Auto Stitch Panoramic images

Posted on Tuesday, April 26, 2005 10:14 PM

I tried several panoramic tools earlier this year to make a 180 panoramic view from the porch of my parents house. To tell the truth; I gave up.

The best program I found was Panorama Tools by Max Lyons but I do not recommend it unless you know what you are doing or have a lot of time to learn how to use it.

AutoStich, on the other hand, promises to be completely automatic. No user intervention required. The cool thing is that it actually works!
This (unedited) picture was taken late last year:

All other panoramic tools I tried earlier this year on the same set of images failed. I guess what tricked them was that I took the pictures from right to left so the order of the images was wrong.

Edit the picture, to trim away the black borders, and you get a "perfect" panorama image:

The only, minor, issue is that it saves the output image as pano.jpg in the same directory as the source files. I hope they will upgrade the demo to a a final version to include a "save as" dialog box.

Coolissimo!

I usually prefer "The Panorma Factory" (http://www.panoramafactory.com/), one of the most powerfull panorama software I've ever found.
Such a power makes obviously the software quaite complex, but it has a beautiful wizard, that in very few "next>next>next...", gives you always stunning results!

During the stitching process, "The Panorma Factory" is also able to detect (from EXIF data) the camera model and the focal lenght used to take the picture, so it's able to "automagically" correct some known aberration in perspective lines.
The latest version is Shareware (~$60), but there's also a freeware version, that lacks the wizard, but works fine anyway.
If you wish, you may check out some pictures of mine here: http://www.b2t.biz/B2Tblog/gallery/22.aspx

Last but not least, "The Panorma Factory" is also able to produce 360° QuickTimeVR movies. But in this field, I definitely prefer iPIX, which requires a fish-eye and a special tripod, but lets you experience the "true spherical immersion" in your pictures (check it out here http://www.concazzurra.it/iPIX/ConcaAzzurra_360.htm and here http://www.ispionline.it/it/ipix/palazzo_ipix_ballo.htm).

I will try both the freeware and shareware versions of The Panorama Factory to see how it works with my images.

Thanks for the tip and compliments for the pictures!
